I helped my mother on her market stall today and as it is situated close to a busy shopping centre, those of you who know me won’t be surprised that I found myself in the bookshop inside the shopping centre. Stephen King said: If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot.” For me this is one of the most important quotes for aspiring writers because reading is how you increase your vocabulary but you also familiarise yourself with the style of other writers whilst trying to find your own. It is important to have your own writing style as that is one of the many elements that makes your writing unique, but it is also important to learn what you like in other styles of writing and try to emulate them as you craft your piece of writing, for example, you might really like the way the author portrays their characters, or you might like the way the plot just seems to flow naturally throughout the novel. Whatever it is, ask yourself why you like it? What has the writer done that has made you pick that element of their novel and then think about this as you write your own. This will help you craft a writing style that is unique to you as it will be a combination of different styles which help you to create your original style of writing.
See you tomorrow!
